Florida Museum of Natural History
Software Developer
The Florida Museum of Natural History is one of the largest natural history museums in the US. I joined their Lepidoptera research department in 2019 to lead their digitization and optimization efforts.
I think of this experience quite fondly, as working alongside researchers was a unique and lovely experience that differs from more typical software engineering work. It also allowed me to drive a project from start to finish, from identifying areas of improvement, designing scalable solutions, and implementing them in a way that fit the needs of the department.
Horn toots
- ● Replaced a 10M+ specimen tracking system. Transitioned the department from an Excel file passed around by email to a relational database with a full stack application for post-ingestion specimen tracking and management
- ● 10x improvement in research data collection. Engineered Python automation systems that dramatically reduced manual workflows.
- ● Rust-based data matrix decoder. Detects and decodes data matrices from specimen images, expanding data analysis capabilities.
- ● React component library for research projects. Designed and implemented with Tailwind CSS, used across multiple departmental tools.
